They have been playing a 30 year old Casio keyboard for the last year and are beginners. After reading your guide and your recommendations I originally thought I had made a decision to rent the Gewa DP300G as you sound so passionate about this brand in particular but then I realised there is no Bluetooth function which would be important to them with wireless headphones etc. I know if I was to ask my husband which brand he would buy, it would be a Yamaha, but this would be because of the well known brand name and it’s resale value rather than how it plays and sounds! So, I suppose my question is, should I then substantially upgrade to a Gewa UP365 to get the Bluetooth facility (which we would not need to upgrade) or would the Broadway Bw1 be suitable for our family needs as it’s quite a bit cheaper and you seem to be enthusiastic about this model too. Also, do you rent the Broadway Bw1? I’ve seen the B1 for rental on your website but then the new version is listed as the BW1? Many thanks for your help so far. It not only has the Bluetooth feature, it has a fuller, warmer piano tone. What’s more, its key touch is more sensitive than the DP300… and it has an extra dynamic level making it suitable for up to grade 8 level. As you say, you wouldn’t need to upgrade this piano. The Broadway BW1 is a new model that replaces the popular B1. It has an improved sound quality over the older model and larger speakers, which give the tone more depth and resonance. The BW1 is a really nice piano for the price and compares well against the equivalent Gewa DP300G. It is also recommended for up to grade 8 level. The BW1 is available on rent to buy for £52 per month. Yours pianistically Graham Howard   “Is the Broadway BW1 the right piano for me?” I’m looking to buy my first digital piano. Brief background: I’ve owned many (prob. 6 or 7) pianos in past, all acoustic upright. Played my share of other pianos, including grand, Steinway etc… I’ve partially disassembled pianos and (been lucky to more/less completely) put together again. Done my own tuning. etc etc. I play some moderate-difficulty “classical” the 3(or 4,5..) B’s, Chopin, lots of Debussy, Kodaly, Bartok etc. Also like playing “pop” songs, have been in pop groups, rock groups; dabble in jazz (want to try more jazz). Was trained in cathedral choir singing, still do church accompaniment on organ/piano. Decided not to do music/piano professionally, due to interest in computer/internet tech., have had my main career in IT, now retired. My wife & I recently downsized our home (moved to new, smaller place), and now I’m ready for a smaller digital piano. I’ve played my share of some of these including Roland, Casio, Clavinova etc. Then I came across your material on the Broadway line, in particular the B1 or its successor BW1. I basically gave my last piano to a good friend when we moved house, so have limited budget: my limit is £1000. So the B1/BW1 appears to be a good candidate. I’ve read through all your material, dig. piano bible. Great stuff! Thank you for this labour of love here. What it boils down to for me is: I see a number of user/buyer comments saying the B1 is better than such & such (Yamaha Arius series, Casio Privia etc), or they came to UK Pianos with intention of buying this make/model and were won over to Broadway. And your statement that B1 is your best selling piano. Yet on your website you “rate” Broadway at 66 (albeit alongside Kawai, Casio), where Roland, Yamaha are up high 70-80. And most importantly, lastly: Because of Covid-19, even when lockdown is lifted and I’ve had both vaccine jabs, I will not come into a piano shop, as would of course normally be the case. (I’m not high risk health wise, but I am older, late 60s) I have to go on recommendations for this important piano decision. So with budget up to £900-1000, and knowing I’m looking for all the stuff under your bible ‘7 points’ — and knowing (at least till everything completely seizes up) I would like to continue playing some kind of electronic piano that at least vaguely feels and sounds like “the real thing”, what would you advise please? Reply/Dear Cliff I’m sure you will get on well with the Broadway BW1, because it has fully-weighted keys, good key touch sensitivity and a enough dynamic levels to cope with the technically difficult Chopin etc. pieces you play. The BW1 has an improved, firmer key feel over the previous Broadway B1 model. The BW1 has Bluetooth and USB compatibility. The technical side is not my forte, but I know it will do anything you require it to. Please let me know if you would like to reserve one. We just spoke about my wife’s piano which we are trying to make a claim for insurance as it was damaged in transit to New Zealand. The model is a Technics Sx-PC25. She paid over 1000 GBP about 20 years ago. If you could give me an equivalent model currently available today would be very much appreciated. My wife said at the time it was a very good model and I see it had very good reviews so obviously we don’t want be short changed by the Insurance Company. Thanks again. Kind regards Sheena Reply/ Hi Sheena I would like to recommend for you the Broadway BW1. This is a new model that has replaced the B1. The buttons on the BW1 are down the side. It has a fully-weighted, touch sensitive key action that feels very close to a real piano. It also has a warm natural tone. The Robertson RP220 is a really old model now. It was only a basic piano with a weighted key touch, so I wouldn’t recommend this as suitable for anything above grade 4 level. I’ll be visiting parents near Aylesbury in the new year so I’m hoping to experience these things in the flesh! Couple of questions, if I may? Specific to the BW1, its width is given as 1375mm. My alcove is 1380mm between the walls but slightly less at floor level due to skirting boards. From the pictures it would seem that this 1375 refers to both the top and bottom. Is that correct? If so, I might need to reconsider. Secondly, a general question regarding running costs. What is the power consumption of these instruments? In Watts per hour. Minimal like LED bulbs or more hefty than that? Many thanks Reply/ Hi Paul The 1375 length is measured from the widest point of the piano, which is at the top. I think it’s less at the bottom, but will need to check when back in the shop on Wednesday. I will let you know. The power consumption of most digital pianos is about the same as having your TV on standby, so it’s quite low: about 3-5 watts per hour. Yours pianistically Graham Howard   “Is the Broadway BW1 the best digital piano for my budget?” Dear Graham, I’ve been reading your fantastically helpful website and digital piano bible on and off for a couple of years now with a view to buying a digital piano, but house moves and other developments kept getting in the way. I’m now ready to get a piano and would really welcome your advice. From reading your website and the piano bible, it sounds like the Broadway BW1 is probably my best bet on my budget but I’d love your input. I did all the grades back when I was at school, learning on an old acoustic piano, then had an old second-hand (1994) Clavinova for a few years while living abroad (I was actually very happy with it, despite its age). I don’t need any extra effects etc., I just would like to play for my own pleasure. I had been looking at second-hand digital pianos online, but after reading about the cons of that on your website, am coming round to the idea of a new(wish) piano — maybe one of the second-hand BW1s that you have at the moment. I was also wondering if the Rent to Own scheme can be used on the second-hand BW1s. Thanks and best wishes. It’s also sensitive under the fingers, so you’re able to play any technical level of music it on it without restrictions. I’m going to wait until tomorrow to open when my husband is home. It was delivered just in the front door. It came off the van upright despite pictures showing it must stay flat. It was also put into my hall upright. Several bashes on the outside box too so needless to say I’m worried. How will I know if it has been damaged during transport? Is there anything I need to look for? Reply/ Hi Nicola Thanks for letting me know. The piano is OK to be upright when in its box. It is very well protected inside, so hopefully should be OK. Just check around the ends of the piano for any damage. If the polystyrene inside is completely broken, then this is the only way the wood on the piano could get damaged.
